Boater Safety Information
Sail250® Virginia will be a world class event, with more than 60 ships from 20 countries participating in events throughout Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay region. As in past events, local boaters will flock to our waterways to view the international fleet and participate in the events.
During past events of this magnitude, the U.S. Coast Guard has estimated that 50,000+ people participated via the water. In a community so connected by our waterways, it is natural to take to the water – to move from place to place, view the parade of sail, and enjoy a spectacular sunset over Hampton Roads.
Keeping everyone safe during Sail250® Virginia is our primary goal. Here are a few safety reminders for boaterwho want to join the festivities:
1. Plan ahead! Know where you are going and let someone know your float plan prior to departing.
2. Have the proper navigational and communications systems in place on your vessel, ensure they are fully operational prior to departing the dock, and understand their operation.
3. Monitor VHF channel 16, which is used for hailing and distress. VHF channel 13 is used by commercial vessels for bridge-to-bridge communications and should be monitored when operating in/near major channels or commercial shipping. Please remember to switch to a working channel to converse with other boaters.
4. Respect all safety zones established by the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy. Restrictions will be in place during the Friday, June 19, 2026, Parade of Sail and around docking locations for the international fleetthroughout the weekend.
5. Check the weather prior to departing the dock and monitor weather conditions during your time on the water. Please monitor NOAA’s marine weather broadcasts on the VHF for the most up to date and accurate marine weather.
6. Virginia law prohibits anyone from operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Boaters can expect an increased presence of law enforcement on the water during Sail250® Virginia, and we encourage safe boating while enjoying your time on the water.
7. Remember to stay hydrated.
8. Maintain situational awareness, especially when operating around other waterborne traffic and beaches.
9. Lend a hand to any boaters in need.
10. Have fun and enjoy Sail250® Virginia!
