MEXICAN NAVY SAILORS TO BE HONORED SATURDAY AT NORFOLK HARBORFEST

Norfolk Harborfest Officials “Deeply Saddened” by the Tragic Accident and Loss

WHO: Norfolk Harborfest and Sail250® Virginia officials

WHAT: A special maritime tribute honoring two Mexican Navy sailors who lost their lives in a tragic accident in New York City on May 17, 2025, aboard the tall ship CUAUHTEMOC.

• A traditional mariner's prayer, ringing of the bells, and placing of wreaths

• The event is available for media coverage and public participation

WHEN: SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: Otter Berth at Town Point Park (Downtown Norfolk waterfront), where the CUAUHTEMOC frequently docked during past maritime events.

WHY: The Mexican Navy tall ship CUAUHTEMOC was in New York on an independent official goodwill visit last month as part of their sail training program.

The CUAUHTEMOC planned to sail on to Iceland after NYC and WAS NOT scheduled to appear at Norfolk Harborfest this year.
The CUAUHTEMOC has been our guest in Norfolk several times in the past and has been invited to participate in the Sail250® Virginia fleet next year, however no commitment had been received prior to or since the accident from the Mexican Navy.
