MEXICAN NAVY SAILORS TO BE HONORED SATURDAY AT NORFOLK HARBORFEST
Norfolk Harborfest Officials “Deeply Saddened” by the Tragic Accident and Loss
WHO: Norfolk Harborfest and Sail250® Virginia officials
WHAT: A special maritime tribute honoring two Mexican Navy sailors who lost their lives in a tragic accident in New York City on May 17, 2025, aboard the tall ship CUAUHTEMOC.
• A traditional mariner's prayer, ringing of the bells, and placing of wreaths
• The event is available for media coverage and public participation
WHEN: SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Otter Berth at Town Point Park (Downtown Norfolk waterfront), where the CUAUHTEMOC frequently docked during past maritime events.
WHY: The Mexican Navy tall ship CUAUHTEMOC was in New York on an independent official goodwill visit last month as part of their sail training program.
- The CUAUHTEMOC planned to sail on to Iceland after NYC and WAS NOT scheduled to appear at Norfolk Harborfest this year.
- The CUAUHTEMOC has been our guest in Norfolk several times in the past and has been invited to participate in the Sail250® Virginia fleet next year, however no commitment had been received prior to or since the accident from the Mexican Navy.
