THE SAIL250® VIRGINIA PARADE OF SAIL: GRANDEUR & SPECTACLE: 25+ TALL SHIPS, 300+ TOTAL VESSELS
Friday, June 19, 2026 — From the Chesapeake Bay to Downtown Norfolk
NORFOLK, Va. (June 1, 2026) — On the morning of Friday, June 19, 2026, the waterways of Hampton Roads will be transformed into one of the most extraordinary maritime spectacles in a quarter century. The Sail250® Virginia Parade of Sail will bring together 25+ international tall ships and other vessels, accompanied by an escort fleet of hundreds of recreational and military vessels, on a 26-nautical-mile route from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel through Hampton Roads and up the Elizabeth River to downtown Norfolk — in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.
The Parade of Sail is a once-in-a-generation spectacle of immense size, diverse scope, and time-honored maritime tradition. For the first and only time during Sail250® Virginia, every tall ship in the fleet will be gathered in one place at one time — at anchor in Lynnhaven Roads the day before the parade — before making their historic passage into Norfolk together.
JUNE 16–19: SEE THE ENTIRE FLEET AT ANCHOR IN LYNNHAVEN ROADS
Beginning as early as Tuesday, June 16, tall ships will begin anchoring at Lynnhaven Roads near Virginia Beach. All vessels will be anchored by 4:00 PM on Thursday, June 18, making that afternoon — and the morning of June 19, before the parade departs — the only opportunity for the public to view the entire assembled fleet of tall ships in a single location. This is a unique, unrepeatable moment.
- Tuesday, June 16, 2026 - Ships begin arriving
- Thursday, June 18, 2026 - All vessels at anchor by 4:00 PM The only day all tall ships will be anchored together in one location
- Most tall ships will dock in downtown Norfolk docks after the parade
- Remaining tall ships will sail on to Sail Virginia℠ 2026 Affiliate Harbors of Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Cape Charles
FRIDAY, JUNE 19: PARADE OF SAIL — ROUTE, ORDER & DETAILS
Departure & Order of March
At 7:00 AM, every ship in the fleet will simultaneously hoist its national colors, signaling the start of the Parade of Sail. The USCG Barque Eagle will be the first tall ship to get underway, departing the Lynnhaven Roads anchorage at 7:35 AM. The remaining tall ships will follow in succession.
Captains will hoist as much sail as safely possible given weather conditions, and dress ship with signal flags and by manning the rails and/or yards as appropriate — turning the fleet into a stunning visual display for the thousands of spectators expected along the shoreline.

Parade of Sail Timeline — Key Milestones (*All Times Approximate)

*All times are local and approximate. Conditions may affect the actual schedule. The public is encouraged to arrive at viewing locations early.
Official Reviewing Location
The official reviewing location for the Sail250® Virginia Parade of Sail will be at the Front Street docking location on the port (left) side of the tall ships along the Elizabeth River. As each vessel passes the reviewing stand, ships are asked to render honors by manning the yards, dipping their ensigns, or by another appropriate maritime custom.
The Escort Fleet
After the parade passes the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, an Escort Fleet of recreational boats from local yacht and boating clubs will join the tall ships on their port side as they continue through Hampton Roads and up the Elizabeth River. About five to six escort vessels will be assigned to accompany each tall ship along the route, with additional boats joining in Hampton Roads. Near Town Point Park, the Escort Fleet will turn to port around the pilot boat Old Dominion, which will be stationed off Hospital Point, then head back down the Elizabeth River after all tall ships have reached their berths.
All Pilots on Deck: Virginia Pilot Association
The Sail250® Virginia Parade of Sail will require all 32 active Virginia Pilots to be on duty simultaneously — a rare and remarkable mobilization that underscores both the scale of the event and the extraordinary coordination required to safely move the international fleet through Hampton Roads’ busy commercial shipping lanes.
“The Virginia Pilot Association’s total commitment to Sail250® Virginia reflects the deep pride we take in Hampton Roads hosting this landmark national commemoration,” said Frank Rabena, Vice President and COO, VPA.
“The Parade of Sail is the centerpiece moment of Sail250® Virginia — and one of the most ambitious maritime undertakings this region has ever coordinated,” said Karen Scherberger, CEO/President, Sail250® Virginia. “From the breathtaking sight of the assembled fleet at anchor in Lynnhaven Roads to Town Point Park on the Elizabeth River, we are inviting the entire Hampton Roads community to line the shores, get on the water, and witness history under sail. This is a sight you will tell your grandchildren about.”
